Elevate your skills to the next level with our 'Beyond the Basics' practical photography workshop, an all-day session designed as a follow-up to our beginners photography course. With particular emphasis on composition and creative photography techniques, this is a hands-on practical day of photography. We begin at the South Bank Cultural Centre, explore the vibrant streets and backdrop of the Brisbane CBD, head out to Roma Street Parklands for sunset, and conclude with some night photography from the Kuripla bridge.

We begin the morning session at the cultural centre in South bank and after a brief introduction make our way over the Victoria bridge to the Brisbane CBD to begin taking photos with an emphasis on exposure and different metering techniques. Our walk will take us past many places of interest with lots of opportunities to take some great photos of the busy streets and varying architecture and places of interest that Brisbane has to offer. After lunch we continue our walk whilst discussing and trying out some new techniques with the second half of the afternoon talking us through Roma street parklands to capture some nature shots before finally crossing over the kurilpa bridge for some creative night shots at Southbank parklands. Please note that we walk a distance of approx 6km.
What you will learn

Manual Mode and exposure compensation - Selectively adjusting aperture, shutter and ISO for effect.

Composition. - We incorporate various composition techniques during the day to make our images more engaging.

Metering modes - How to choose the right metering mode for your subject and light situation.

Creative capture - Combining different camera techniques (motion blur / depth of field / compressing perspective).

Monochrome - Using the monochrome / black and white camera settings

The quality of light - Working with light using diffusers, reflectors and flash.

Lens focal length - Adjusting the zoom / focal length and how it affects depth of field and perspective.

Filters - Neutral Density, Polarising filters and more explained and demonstrated.

Macro - Close up photography and filling the frame.
Frequently asked questions
Is my camera suitable?
Our courses are designed for users of Mirrorless and DSLR (digital slr) cameras (including ‘micro four thirds’ or ‘hybrid’ cameras).
If you have a compact or ‘bridge camera’ then you are also very welcome to join us on any of the courses but we recommend that you contact us prior to booking. We also have some loan cameras (Nikon and Canon) as well as tripods available to borrow for FREE upon request.
I'm a beginner, is this workshop for me?
If you are shooting manual and feel you have a good understanding of aperture, shutter and ISO then yes. If not then we would advise that you consider taking part in our Beginner Photography Workshop first.
Will I need a tripod?
Yes, a tripod will be required to get the most from this workshop. Don't worry if you do not have one as we have plenty of tripods available to borrow if you wish at no charge.
Where is this workshop held?
The Beyond the Basics workshop begins in Southbank, we walk over the bridge to the CBD, in the afternoon we head over to Roma Street Parklands and finally over the Kurilpa bridge back to Southbank. Total distance walked is approx 6km.
